Gujarati Shaala
The Shree
Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple was officially opened in August 1988. It soon became apparent that,
with such a large community of Gujaratis living in the near by area, we should create a Swaminarayan Gujarati
school aiming to teach the young generation their mother language. With the immigration of Gujaratis to Britain, it was predicted that the western culture and language would become so dominant in the lives of these people that their native tongue would be forgotten within a decade. The studying of Gujarati would develop their native language,
enabling students to read texts of a diverse nature including Holy Scriptures and to communicate with their elders.
Thereby, in September
1988, the Gujarati Shaala was officially operating at the temple in the
hope that generations of the future would be able to speak, write and read the native tongue of Gujarati, which
would be taught and maintained for many years to come. The Shaala opening, with the help of some dedicated and experienced teachers, was successful.
Today, the Gujarati
Shaala has been open for over a decade and the standard of teaching continues to improve. The school consists of up to seven different class levels ranging from basic alphabet to GCSE standard. The text used to teach the students is very diverse and enables students to grasp not only the concepts of the Gujarati language but also knowledge upon our religion and the glory of our mother country, India . External GCSE examination boards like Cambridge (OCR) have approved the teaching material, illustrating the quality of teaching we aim to provide.
Both young and experienced teachers continue to offer their services to the temple in the aim of maintaining
the teaching of Gujarati. The teachers work on a voluntary basis at the
school and are very professional and motivated towards improving teaching standards.
We have recently started a new, more advanced, Gujarati class for those who have passed GCSE, which is emphatically based on the study and understanding of Swaminarayan Sampraday scriptures.
The Gujarati School is open every Saturday from the times of
5:00pm-7:00pm.
There is no admission charge and the classes are free and open to all.
